Tips on Air Pressure for Tractor Tires

The optimal tire pressure for tractor tires – what really matters

Many people want a fixed guideline for the correct tire pressure for tractor tires. Set it once and never think about it again – unfortunately, this doesn't work in practice.

The appropriate internal pressure is always individual. It depends on the specific tire, the load, the operation, and the ground. Therefore, there is no universal tire pressure that fits every situation.

Why axle load is crucial

The basis for correct tire pressure setting is the actual axle load of the tractor. Only when it is known how much weight acts on the front and rear axles can it be determined how much load an individual tire must bear.

With these values, you can determine the correct pressure in the load capacity and tire pressure tables of the tire manufacturer. Interpneu AG supports agricultural businesses in selecting suitable tires and appropriate pressure settings.

Accurately determine axle load

The most reliable method is to weigh the tractor. Each axle is measured individually on a scale. The measured weight is then divided by two – this gives you the load per tire.

Ensure that when weighing the front axle, the load on the rear axle is lowered. When weighing the rear axle, the front weight should be raised accordingly to obtain correct results.

Calculation with online tools

Alternatively, axle loads can also be calculated. This requires information such as tractor weight, implement weight, front ballast, wheelbase, and various distances.

However, this method only provides approximate values and does not replace a measurement with a scale.

Adjust tire pressure according to the area of use

The ideal tire pressure varies depending on the application. Especially with heavy equipment, the tire pressure must always be adjusted to the highest occurring load.

Higher tire pressure is necessary for road driving. It reduces rolling resistance, protects the tires, and lowers fuel consumption. Conversely, excessively low pressure on the road leads to increased wear and higher consumption.

Optimal conditions in the field

When working in the field, the lowest possible tire pressure is advantageous. This minimizes soil compaction and protects the soil. At the same time, the tires must still safely carry the total weight of the tractor, implement, and counterweight.

To avoid having to manually adjust the tire pressure several times a day, tire pressure control systems offer an efficient solution. These systems allow the tire pressure to be quickly adjusted while driving. An integrated compressor supplies air directly to the rotating tires.

More load capacity thanks to modern tire technologies

New tire technologies now allow for significantly more flexibility at low tire pressures. Tires with VF and IF designations have proven particularly effective.

VF tires – maximum flexibility

VF (Very High Flexion) tires have particularly flexible sidewalls. This allows the tire pressure to be significantly reduced even with heavy loads – in many cases down to about 0.5 bar.

Compared to standard tires, VF tires can carry approximately 40 percent more weight. The lower ground pressure has a positive effect on soil structure and supports healthy plant growth.

IF tires – the economical middle ground

IF (Increased Flexion) tires offer improved load capacity compared to conventional tires. At the same tire pressure, they can carry approximately 20 percent more load.

They represent an attractive alternative if more soil protection is desired without immediately opting for VF technology.
